The bowler hat is the iconic signature of surrealist painter René Magritte. Magritte explored a variety of painting styles during the golden age of modernism before settling into surrealism. After WWII he forged banknotes and paintings by popular artists including Picasso. His work influenced later conceptual and especially pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns.
In an alternate universe Magritte would have been the proprietor of a men’s shop.
